Operation Red Zone leaves Chicago officials red faced when public discovers the truth about NATO summit

The head of Chicago’s NATO Host Committee said Thursday she was blindsided by the federal government’s decision to create a militarized “Red Zone” in the Loop to protect federal buildings in the run-up to the May 20-21 summit at McCormick Place. The image of federal agents on downtown streets far from McCormick Place — in battle gear, weapons slung — three weeks before the summit is certain to have a chilling effect on those who live and work in the Loop. It also calls into question Host Committee Executive Director Lori Healey’s oft-repeated message that Chicago will remain “open for business” during the summit. On Thursday, Healey found herself in the difficult position of having to convince the public that a scary headline that blindsided even her is not an indication that the feds are bracing...

Milwaukee Red Cross Told To Prep For Chicago Evacuation During NATO Summit

CHICAGO (CBS) – Is there a secret plan to evacuate some residents of Chicago in the event of major trouble during the NATO summit next month? CBS 2 has uncovered some evidence that there is. It comes from the Milwaukee area branch of the American Red Cross. CBS 2 News has obtained a copy of a Red Cross e-mail sent to volunteers in the Milwaukee area. It said the NATO summit “may create unrest or another national security incident. The American Red Cross in southeastern Wisconsin has been asked to place a number of shelters on...

It's the first time Russian service members will be invited into the United States for a joint drill. A Russian airborne task force will "exercise with U.S. special service weapons," an announcement by Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson Col. Aleksandr Kucherenko revealed. The official purpose of the joint training is to practice airborne tactics and anti-terror operations, such as dropping into a hostile...

Huge green cloud over Moscow has terrified Russians tweeting for their lives

Anxious Russians have been bombarding Twitter today with fears about an ominous green cloud looming over Moscow. Having awoken to the bizarrely tinged skies talk of chemical spills and ash clouds soon dominated the site, while some even connected the unusual scenes to today's anniversary of the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl. But as suggestions of evacuations emerged and thousands of nervy phone calls reached the capital's bosses it appears there is no need to panic. Because far from paranormal or the onset of war, according to...

IDF chief: Other nations could strike Iran

Israel's military chief said Thursday that other countries have readied their armed forces for a potential strike against Iran's nuclear sites to keep Tehran from acquiring atomic weapons. Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz did not specify which nations might be willing to support or take direct action against Iran. Still, his comments were one of the strongest hints yet that Israel may have the backing of other countries to strike the Islamic Republic to prevent it from developing nuclear arms. "The military force is ready," Gantz said. "Not only our forces, but other forces...

Iran 'mobilizing' for cyberwar with West: experts

AFP - Iran is busy acquiring the technical know-how to launch a potentially crippling cyber-attack on the United States and its allies, experts told a congressional hearing on Thursday, urging the US to step up its defensive measures. "Over the past three years, the Iranian regime has invested heavily in both defensive and offensive capabilities in cyberspace," said Ilan Berman, vice president of the American Foreign Policy Council. "Equally significant, its leaders now increasingly appear to view cyber-warfare as a potential avenue of action against...

German analysts say new North Korea missiles are fakes

German missile engineers Markus Schiller and Robert Schmucker of Schmucker Technologie said their findings cast doubt on the impoverished Communist state's claims of military strength. "For now, the ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) presentation was nothing else than a nice dog and pony show," they wrote in an April 18 analysis posted online at Arms Control Wonk here The weapons were displayed at an April 15 parade before North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, two days after a failed attempt by the country to launch a long-range missile.

Scientists altered tests of nukes at test site

A 90-foot-long gun scientists at the Nevada National Security Site use to check the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile was shut down for two years after plutonium fragments escaped a primary containment vessel, federal officials said Thursday. They found "an abnormal amount of contamination" after a plutonium experiment in February 2009, according to an audit report released by the Department of Energy. The high-powered gas gun known as JASPER - for Joint Actinide Shock Physics Experimental Research - is used to ensure that the...

Okinawa deal between US and Japan to move marines

The United States and Japan have reached a deal to move thousands of US Marines from the island of Okinawa. Some 9,000 marines will be sent to ''locations outside of Japan'', a joint statement by Washington and Tokyo said. Some 10,000 troops will remain. The revised agreement comes ahead of a visit to Washington by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. The two sides have still not reached agreement on closing the controversial Futenma airbase on Okinawa. The troops leaving Okinawa will be moved to Guam, Hawaii and other...

Feds to consider biometrics for permanent residents to combat fraud

OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Jason Kenney says he supports extending biometric ID requirements to permanent residents and would consider amending his current omnibus immigration bill to make it happen. "I think in principle, we should be doing everything we reasonably can to identify visitors or immigrants and ensure they don't represent a threat to Canada's safety, so biometrics is the best technical tool at our disposal and I think in principle, that it should be applied to not just temporary but also permanent residents,"..

H5N1 Flu Virus Could be 'Engineered' to Put Hundreds of Millions at Risk, Scientist Tells Homeland Security Committee

(CNSNews.com) - If H5N1 bird flu, which has a 60-percent fatality rate, were engineered to spread like seasonal flu, hundreds of millions of lives would be at risk, a scientist told the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Thursday. “What happens if a mammalian transmissible H5N1 flu starts to spread?" Thomas Inglesby, CEO and director of the Center for Biosecurity at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, asked rhetorically in his testimony. "Seasonal flu affects 10 to 20 percent of the world every year--as much as a billion...

Collapse of the EU a “Realistic Scenario”

“Over the past months, we experienced a worrisome trend towards re-nationalization and ‘summitization,’” said Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament and member of the German opposition SPD, to a forum of the European Commission on Wednesday. His complaints went to the heart of democracy at the European level. Government leaders were becoming “more arrogant” and made decisions “behind closed doors, in violation of the community method.” They were attempting “to create a fiscal union outside the...

National Cathedral in DC restarts gargoyle tours

The Washington National Cathedral will be offering tours of its unique stone carvings for the first time since the building was damaged by an earthquake last year. Tours exploring more than 100 gargoyles perched on the cathedral's facade will begin again Sunday at 2 p.m. The gargoyles include monsters, dogs and horses, as well as "Star Wars" villain Darth Vader. The cathedral had to suspend the tour, as well as other regular events, following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake on Aug. 23. The quake caused stonework to fall from the building's towers...

Man Swallowed by Jersey Shore Sinkhole

A dozen or so sinkholes have formed along a New Jersey beach, terrifying one resident who fell in and alarming officials who visited the swath of coastline Thursday. The Monmouth Beach resident who fell into a waist-deep hole while walking along the beach Tuesday said he feared for his life when he was swallowed up. "All of the sand just came right down and sucked me in," he said. "I couldn't move, I was like in concrete." The resident, who did not want his name used, had fallen into one of the sinkholes of varying sizes that developed along a sea wall...

Did a UFO cause the Pakistan 737 air crash? Reports suggest pilot may have been 'buzzed' by a triangular-shaped object before the accident

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the cause of the Bhoja Air Boeing 737 crash in Pakistan last Friday may have been a UFO sighting by the pilot. A Russian news report on the crash posted on YouTube incorporates footage of three mysterious lights moving in formation, leading to speculation in the UFO community that blame for the tragic accident may lie with an extra-terrestrial craft.
